Events Intern
Job Summary
The Events Intern will assist the Director of Events in all aspects of planning an event, including but not limited to; scheduling volunteers, collaborating with the Facilities Department to decorate the grounds for an event, determining and obtaining any necessary permits or licenses, keeping detailed documentation of all requirements for staff and volunteers, working with corporate partners to gather supplies for event, and collaborating with the Director of Marketing to increase ticket sales.
The Events Intern will be involved in all relevant team meetings and, at the discretion of the Director of Events, may be assigned to a task outside of Special Events in order to serve the Museum as a whole.
Upon completion of the 10-week internship, the intern will also have experience and knowledge of:
- Event marketing strategy
- Event planning
- Execution of one of the Museum’s Signature Events
- Volunteer engagement and coordination
- Fundraising event planning and execution
- Integrated development database management
- Nonprofit Management
- Review and evaluation of event budgets
Duties and Responsibilities
This internship will work collaboratively with the Event and Marketing Teams and be focused on marketing and event coordination within the following key areas:
Fourth of July Naturalization Ceremony
- Assist the Director of Events in all logistics for the Naturalization Ceremony which will take place on the museum grounds on the 4th of July.
- Contact relevant politicians and local officials to arrange event speakers or attendees.
- Work with the Director of Human Resources to ensure adequate volunteer coverage for the day of the event.
Vintage & Vine
- Aid with conducting mass-mailings, cold-calls and other forms of solicitation to potential donors and vendors for the end-of-summer event.
- Collaborate with the Director of Events on managing volunteers and creating a detailed day-of work plan.
- Update a local database of restaurants, wine vendors, and other participants for end-of-summer event, Vintage & Vine.
Additional Duties
- Collaborate with the Director of Marketing to develop the virtual marketing and event vision, and ensure consistency and alignment with SBM branding.
- Participate as an active member of the SBM staff by attending team meetings.
Qualifications
- Must be enrolled as a current undergraduate or graduate student in good standing in order to be eligible for a SBM internship;
- Creative;
- Experience with marketing and graphic design software;
- Excellent research and problem solving skills;
- Strong written, oral, and communication/presentation skills;
- Pursuing degree in communications, marketing, museum studies, nonprofit management, or other related field;
- An interest in marketing, community engagement, and/or non-profit management.
- Must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Physical Requirements:
- Work entails moving around the 10-acre site, for extended periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be able to bend, stoop, and kneel, and must be able to lift/carry moderate weight.

Optional Housing
Optional on-site housing is provided in Hough House for interns who need housing.
Hough House is open to all interns regardless of sex or age. While the common areas in Hough are co-ed, the bedrooms are single-sex based on the gender with which each intern identifies, and interns should expect to have a roommate for the duration of their stay in Hough House.
