Audio Visual Technician

Status: Part-Time (8-12 hours per week)

Direct Reports: None

I. Position Purpose

To provide high-quality audio, visual, and media support for both traditional and contemporary worship services and rehearsals, ensuring a professional and spiritually engaging environment.

 

II. Core Responsibilities

1. Audio Engineering

  • Live Mixing: Operate the digital console during rehearsals and Sunday services. Create a balanced, clear, and modern "contemporary" mix.
  • Monitor Mixing: Manage In-Ear Monitor mixes for vocalists and musicians to ensure the musicians can perform at their best.
  • Stage Management: Oversee the placement of microphones, boxes, and cabling. Maintain a clean and safe stage environment (cable management).
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine checks on microphones, cables, and wireless systems (battery management). Report any hardware failures to the Director.

2. Media and Visual Production

  • Presentation Software: Operate (or oversee volunteers operating) software packages for lyrics, scripture, and sermon graphics.
  • Lighting: Execute basic lighting cues and transitions to enhance the atmosphere of worship without being a distraction.
  • Livestream Support: Ensure the audio feed for the livestream is clear and balanced and assist in the basic operation of cameras or streaming software if needed.

3. Team Collaboration and Preparation

  • Rehearsals: Attend mid-week rehearsals to dial in the mix and work through technical transitions with the band.
  • Planning: Review the order of worship, song arrangements, and technical notes before arriving on campus.
  • Volunteer Training: Assist the Director in coaching and "shadowing" lay volunteers who wish to learn basic sound or media operations.

Qualifications

  • Technical Proficiency: Experience with digital consoles 
  • Musical Ear: Ability to distinguish between frequencies, understand instrument "pocketing" in a mix, and follow a lead sheet or click track.
  • Problem-Solving: The ability to remain calm under pressure and troubleshoot technical "glitches" live during a service.
  • Software: Proficient with <insert software> and basic digital audio workstations.
  • Spiritual Character: A commitment to the mission of the church and a respectful, helpful attitude toward staff and congregants.
