SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The communication specialist is responsible for creating and editing content for audiences visiting digital Cru properties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

As an employee with Cru:

  • Share what God is teaching him or her
  • Consistently attend and participate in team/ministry devotional times.

NOTE: This is a missionary support raising role meaning that Cru pays you from the missionary support you raise. We train and coach you well in this process. The application is open until March 1, 2026 and decisions are made thereafter. We also host a preview weekend for this role in Orlando in early February 2026.

For this position:

  • Perform online and on the ground research for content
  • Develop and provide content that will motivate and engage users so that they regularly access the website and utilize it as a source of information and/or decision-making. 
  • Propose story/article ideas to editors; 
  • Write excellent stories/articles for various Cru publications, tools and outlets, such as cru.org, social media channels and e-newsletters
  • Work alongside editors to optimize content
  • Collaborate with writer’s team as assigned
  • Incorporate writer’s training and best practices in day to day work
  • Utilize Cru’s voice/tone/brand in developing content  
  • Develop trusted relationships with field staff members to collect stories.
  • Write on a team blog.

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Writing with theological mindset and for a wide-range of audiences
  • Asana or similar Project Management Tool
  • Associated Press Style Writing
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
  • Digital and social communication principles

ABILITY TO:

  • Create and communicate ideas verbally and in writing
  • Pay attention to details
  • Edit for content and clarity
  • Work independently 
  • Be a self-starter, self-disciplined, show initiative, budget time, as well as meet deadlines and production schedules
  • Organized and able to multitask
  • Use excellent judgment in determining stories and items that fit the Cru organization and/or brand.

  • Track multiple projects and moving parts
  • Learn Cru branding, voice and tone

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or English, plus 2 years experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience is also acceptable.  Experience with Cru preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ABILITIES  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to walk and sit.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.  Employee must also have ability to travel by car and plane both nationally and internationally.
